Veterinary Surgical Coaching & Training

In-Person Surgical Coaching

Helen is proud of the veterinary profession and recognises, and feels herself, the stresses we face.  Thus, she is committed to helping her colleagues achieve their best. Whilst courses and workshops are invaluable, such learned skills need to be applied to clinical cases and this transition from classroom to 'real life' can be daunting, whether you are a new graduate or a vet with many years of experience.

So, imagine if Helen came to your own practice to help you and your team more easily make these transitions! In a supportive and cost effective environment, we can together develop individualised professional skills covering a wide range of small animal surgical conditions.

Helen's overarching aim is to optimise patient outcome and improve job satisfaction for the entire veterinary team.

  • We start with a Free Telephone Chat to establish your unique goals and determine the best way forward for you, your team, and your patient.
  • We follow with a Tele-Surgical Consultation.  Helen receives from you all pertinent case information, including clinical notes, laboratory results, and diagnostic images.  Once reviewed, she will arrange a mutually convenient time to discuss your case via telephone or video conferencing.  From here, we determine together the best plan of action, ensuring that you have all that is needed to safely and successfully complete a particular surgery, such as personnel, equipment, theatre protocols, and suitable after-hours care.
  • Then Helen offers Surgery with Support.  She may attend your clinic to 'scrub-in' with you to perform certain procedures 'in-house'.  She will also provide you and your team with recommended peri-operative protocols. Having completed preliminary training in surgical workshops is encouraged but not essential.   Alternatives, such as Helen receiving a case as a 'full referral' carried out at your or another's facility and/or her facilitating on-referral to another centre, will also be discussed.

Veterinary Team Training & Education

A successful surgical outcome relies on the entire veterinary team! Helen can provide training to all your staff so that they can thrive and reach their potential. This can occur at the same time as the surgical coaching session and/or as a separate bespoke-CPD session.

Recent examples of lectures and workshops delivered by Helen include how to develop and utilise surgical checklists, infection prevention and control, brachycephalic airway surgery, laryngeal paralysis surgery, perineal hernia surgery, wound management, and wound closure strategies including advanced flaps and grafts.

For The Pet Owner

Helen truly understands how stressful it is when one of your family needs surgical help - she has been there herself.  To access her services, you will require a Referral that involves your primary care veterinarian.   Talk with your veterinarian and we can establish the most optimal and cost-effective way forward for your fur family member and you.

Following this Referral contact, Helen may :

  • Attend your own local veterinary facility to directly help that team 'in-house' as a coach, or
  • Perform the necessary procedures at an alternative appropriate clinic, or
  • Facilitate on-referral to another appropriate centre for you within New Zealand
